Process

Research

Collaborated with Project Managers and the product team to gather feedback and explore potential improvements to the system. Completed a competitive analysis and developed a user journey map to identify challenges users faced and areas where the experience could be improved. These discussions informed design changes aimed at enhancing user experience and operational workflows.

Insights Analysis

Enhanced Map Utilization & Interaction

64.5% of users rely on the map for viewing record data, highlighting the importance of a responsive, user-friendly interface. Improving map controls and simplifying interactions enhances the overall experience, making it easier to access and interpret the data.

Optimized Data Presentation & Accessibility

58.3% of users prioritize a well-organized and intuitive layout across tables, map cards, and asset pages, making key data easy to access and interpret. Refining these elements ensures information is clearly displayed, enhancing usability and improving overall data interaction.

Intuitive Workflow Design for Better Usability

64.7% of users value a consistent and well-organized workflow that minimizes cognitive load. Clear input areas, consistent design elements, and straightforward task flows help users quickly identify and complete tasks efficiently.

Seamless Cross-Device Experience

59.8% of users expect a smooth and consistent experience across devices, highlighting the importance of responsive design. Adaptive layouts and optimized performance across screen sizes ensure better usability and accessibility.

Design Flow

Focused on improving the app's usability by optimizing key tasks, enhancing data accessibility, and streamlining processes. This involved identifying areas for improvement, iterating on design concepts, and ensuring a smooth experience across devices. Collaboration with cross-functional teams ensured the design was aligned with both user needs and project goals.

Design Overview

The design overhaul focuses on improving user experience by enhancing map-based navigation and optimizing asset management. By streamlining interactions and refining the layout, the changes make it easier for users to manage and review their assets efficiently. These updates contribute to a smoother, more intuitive interface, improving both task flow and data accessibility.

Provide a map-based interface for clearer and more efficient asset data display.

Simplify task and screen transitions by minimizing unnecessary steps.

Organize essential data to reduce information clutter on screens.

Introduce checkboxes for record selection and status banners for device status

Intuitive Interactive Map Experience

The redesigned user interface enhances map usability by improving organization and visibility. With streamlined controls and filtering options, users can now interact with the map more efficiently, focusing on relevant records with ease.

Map Card

The map card has been refined for better usability, now displaying the map symbol in the top-left corner when selecting map records. This ensures unobstructed view of the pin’s location, with a distinct shape to indicate the selected state.

Map Settings

Map controls are now grouped by function in the top right corner, making it easier for users to identify related actions. Users can switch map types or toggle components directly within the map, improving clarity and simplifying interactions with essential map features like zoom and location tracking.

Global Search

Users can select or deselect checkboxes within project folders to filter map records, improving map interaction and focusing on relevant records.

Customizable Table Layout & Data Display

The design now offers more flexibility in data presentation, allowing users to customize the table view by expanding or minimizing sections to suit their preferences. Additionally, the introduction of a vertical table layout gives users the option to view multiple records at once, or stick with the default horizontal layout for better access to attribute data.

Horizontal Layout

Default stacked view with the map on top and an expandable data table below.

Vertical Layout

New side-by-side view for map records and the data table.

Unified Workflow Design & System

A consistent workflow design and system were implemented to ensure uniformity across forms and interface, reducing cognitive load with clear input areas and simplified task flows. The placeholder screen was revamped with a location selection tool, enhancing user interaction and optimizing workspace utilization.

Workflows Modal

Update each form element to a container for clearer input and placeholder visibility. Additionally, relocate the button to the bottom and rename it to action labels like "Submit" or "Create" instead of "Done."

Location Select

Utilize the map screen more efficiently to increase user interaction for location selection.

Dynamic, Screen-Responsive Design

The responsive design ensures the app adjusts smoothly to various screen sizes, offering a consistent and seamless experience on any device. The layout dynamically resizes, enhancing usability across different environments and screen types.

Outcome & Conclusion

The redesigned Streetlight App version 5.6.0 has been successfully released and delivered to over 20 utility clients, including Duke Energy, NES Commercial, Nextra, and PHI. The transition went smoothly, improving efficiency for field crews and enhancing client operations. For TerraGo, these updates reduce support demands and streamline future product enhancements.
